Hundreds of movies have been screen at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), but not all of those are good. Some of them will most likely find the path to the Oscars, while the others will be less fortunate. Here are 19 movies from the 2018 TIFF that you should watch as soon as they come out.
The Sisters Brothers
The Sisters Brothers is a comedic Western based on the Patrick deWitt’s novel that carries the same name. Joaquin Phoenix and John C. Reilly will star in this one, and they will play brothers who are assassins in the Wild West.
Fahrenheit 11/9
This one is Micheal Moore’s best movie in years, and it is a film against Donald Trump looking at the situation from a slightly different angle. If you love watching people bashing Trump, this is the film for you.
Free Solo
Distributor behind this release that comes out on September 28 is National Geographic Documentary films. It will tell you a story about free climber Alex Honnold, so get ready!
The Old Man and the Gun
Robert Redford is about to retire, but this one will be his final role. Catch the legendary actor for the last time as he robs a bank and escapes San Quentin at the age of 70. He starts robbing banks again.
A Star is Born
A Star is Born has been adapted multiple times, but Bradley Cooper decided to make his directorial debut with this one. Lady Gaga is another name you are familiar with, and which is tied to this movie.
The Hate U Give
Amandla Stenberg is the perfect cast for The Hate U Give, an adaptation of Angie Thomas’ best-selling novel. The film is somewhere between a coming-of-age story and a social drama.
First Man
On October 12, you will be able to watch First Man, directed by Damien Chazelle. The story will tell us a story about Neil Armstrong, played by Ryan Gosling.
Can You Ever Forgive Me?
This movie is based on Lee Israel’s memoir of the same name, and Marielle Heller will helm the film with Melissa McCarthy in the role of Israel.
Burning
One of the best movies of the Toronto Film Festival was Burning from Korean director Lee Chang-dong. We can trace the film’s origin to Haruki Murakami’s story Barn Burning, but the stories do differ. The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun is one of the cast members.
Widows
Steve McQueen, who directed 12 Years a Slave, directs the film calls Widows. A group of women, who didn’t know each other, join together to finish the heist started by their men, who weren’t so fortunate.
Shoplifters
Shoplifters already aired at Cannes and it received the top prize. It is a drama coming from the director Hirokazu Kore-eda. The narrative is engaging with strong performances, and this film is highly recommended.
If Beale Street Could Talk
Moonlight won Best Picture in 2017, and proud director Barry Jenkins moved on to adapt James Baldwin’s novel called If Beale Street Could Talk. The story follows a couple in Harlem who grew up together and fell in love. But not everything is this simple.
Cold War
Cold War is a romantic tragedy by Polish director Pawel Pawlikowski, and it was easily one of the top movies at Cannes. The story follows a European couple in love at the beginning of the Cold War.
High Life
Director Claire Denis presents a visionary film called High Life. It revolves around a group of convicts on death row who got sent into deep space in the name of science.
American Dharma
Errol Morris talks with former Breitbart chair and White House adviser Steve Bannon who shares his views and the interpretation of history and his connections with Donald Trump.
In Fabric
Director Peter Strickland managed to confuse the crowds by telling a tale of shopping. You might not get the movie, but that is ok. Still, you will not be listless at the end of it.
Roma
Roma has been in the rumor mill for a long time, but it meets the expectations. A girl is working for a family in Mexico City, and Alfonso Cuaron told the story perfectly.
What You Gonna Do When the World’s on Fire
Roberto Minervini’s documentary films such as The Other Side shows us the other side of America which is often forgotten. In the new release, he observes the life of a few black residents from Louisiana, and he puts that on screen.
Vox Lux
Vox Lux follows Celeste (Raffey Cassidy), a teenage girl who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. She was wounded in a school shooting. She sings a song at a memorial for her killed classmates and becomes a sensation of the nation.
