This year’s ranking is led by Scarlett Johansson with incredible $40.5 million in pretax earnings, which makes her the highest-paid female star. One of her major roles was in Avengers where she played Black Widow, and she is expected to return for the fourth movie in the superhero franchise.

“The percent of budget cost have certainly skewed heavy, particularly on the Avengers movies, to cast now, whereas maybe in the early ones it was more visual effects or below the line,” said Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios President and producer last year. “But that’s okay because [the actors] are the best effects.”

The role of women in movies is still questionable, and according to a 2016 study, female characters fill only 28.7% of all speaking roles in films. This means that men still do get much more attention, but this has been improving in the past years, and this list shows that women are on the right track to catch up.
