Throughout history, entertainment, television, and movies have always been big business.  When we look at the history of cinema, the highest-grossing movie of all time is “Avatar,” which was a sci-fi fantasy that was directed by James Cameron.  The film was released in 2009 with the stars Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington, and it has grossed more than $2,780,000,000.

Its story takes place on an interesting alien planet (called Pandora) and its inhabitants are called the Na’vi.  These beings might appear primitive at first glance, however, they are really highly evolved creatures. The Na’vi are capable of creating Avatars, which are human hybrids that can be useful because Pandora is largely poisonous.  These hybrids link to the human brain to allow for free thought and movement. The story captured viewers’ imaginations, and this propelled the movie in top the to space of all time.

The second highest grossing movie of all time is “Avengers: Endgame,” which was created by Marvel Studios and has grossed over $1,342,000,000.  It was released in 2019 as the fourth installment in the franchise. According to AskTraders.com, the movie actually has the record for highest market revenue during an opening weekend (both globally and in the United States).  The next on the list is called “Titanic,” which is another film directed by James Cameron. The film stars Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio and has grossed more than $2,186,000,000.  It based on the 1912 story of a significant boat crash but was actually released in 1997. This historical tale will likely live on through history in this classic movie depiction of the event.

Next on the list is called “’Star Wars: The Force Awakens” which is a sci-fi fantasy that was directed by J.J. Abrams.  The film stars Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Oscar Isaac, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, and John Boyega. To date, it has grossed more than $2,054,000,000.  It was released in 2015, however, it is the latest installment in a long running franchise. The story takes place thirty years later, following the Galactic Empire demise so there is a lot of internal history involved when assessing the story of this movie.

The number five movie on the list is another familiar name, with the title “Avengers: Infinity War.”  Of course, it was also released by Marvel Studios and it has grossed more than $2,003,000,000. This film is actually the third installment in the franchise of the “Avengers” franchise, and when it was originally released it set the record for the highest-grossing opening weekend in the United States.

Number six on the list is a movie called “Jurassic World,” which is a sci-fi horror directed by Colin Trevorrow.  The movie stars Ty Simpkins, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Chris Pratt, and has grossed over $1,670,000,000 to date.

In the seventh place is yet another film in the “Avengers” franchise, which is simply called “Marvel’s The Avengers.”  The film stars most of the actors and actresses that were present in the other films in the franchise, and it has grossed over $1,519,000,000 to date.

The last movie on the list is called “Furious 7,” which is an action film directed by James Wan.  To date, it has grossed more than $1,516,000,000, which puts it in the eighth position on the list.

As we can see, the movie industry still makes big bucks.  However, it is also important to see the list of top grossing movies of all time when they are adjusted for inflation.  Interestingly, many of these names change and it really shows the power of finance and business as they relate to the world of movies and film.
